Insight of the Week
It’s Cold/Flu Season
Be Cautious If Using Essential Oils!
I will start by saying, it is never my goal here in the newsletter to give advice, only to provide insights for topics that either myself and/or other Mamas in the group are experiencing. With that said, I want to share a few of my thoughts on essential oils. First and foremost, check with your pediatrician before adding something new to the mix! While essential oils can be so beneficial in healing, calming and protecting, I recently learned a few key points from our pediatrician during Blake’s last cold after I admittedly applied diluted essential oils directly to her nose before bed - which turns out can be dangerous.
She is absolutely fine, but UGH - don’t be like me!
Here are my main takeaways and you may decide some or all of these aren’t accurate for you:
Infant skin acts like a sponge to anything it touches. Meaning their body will absorb anything that is applied to it.
Babies under 3 months shouldn’t be exposed to any essential oils at all. This includes pregnancy so check with your doctor before your masseuse uses lavender!
Unless you have checked with your child’s doctor, err on the safe side and avoid topical application of essential oils to your baby even if diluted in a carrier oil like coconut oil. Stick to the diffuser!
Essential oils should NOT be ingested. It is best to keep essential oils away from baby’s nose and mouth, which also means avoid using them in their baths.
There is a short list of essential oils that are considered safe to use in a diffuser between 3 months and 3 years of age (think 2-3 drops of chamomile, lavender, or fir)
Eucalyptus Radiata is the only form of Eucalyptus that is considered safe to use around babies because it is not as potent. However, to avoid confusion and risk, and at the recommendation of our doctor, we are going to avoid Eucalyptus until our daughter is a bit older. The risk is skin irritation/rashes and burning as well as respiratory issues.
In short and as always, check with your doctor to determine what is safe for you and your baby!
